MEDITATION ON THE ENTERPRISE.
What some I think many overlook is what the Enterprise represents. It's not merely a model be it plastic or CGI. It's an ideal. It represents the vehicle not merely of the crew but of the hopes and dreams of everyone in the audience...the Enterprise to my mind has the same kind of totemic power that one finds in the "S" symbol on Superman's chest or Luke Skywalker's light saber. Their inherent meaning goes far beyond the ambitions of the prop department.
Those who complained that Kirk's approach to the ship in Star Trek:TMP was boring missed the point. Before 1979 all fans ever saw was the Enterprise on small low definition televisions (and sometimes black and white) and now finally we got to see it as we had always dreamed...a technological marvel that seemed to manifest the collective hopes of the entire human race.
